Homemade Granola

Recently I tried making my own granola. It ended up being quite simple, and I recommend trying it yourself. Dakota and I both find most store-bought granolas way too sweet and full of "extra" flavors. So, my goal was to make granola that was simple, healthy and tasty.

White House Coop?

Bill Niman and Nicolette Hahn Niman have made a brilliant suggestion for the Obama's next sustainable step now that they've put in a vegetable garden: chickens! There's certainly plently of room on the White House grounds for a nice coop and run. Think how happy their guests will be to have fresh free range eggs for breakfast. Oh, and I bet Malia isn't allergic to chick fluff!

Perhaps us backyard chicken enthusiasts should start a petition.

The idea of chickens on the White House lawn has made me laugh -- thanks for the smile! I'm guessing the answer would be ... no. In my midwestern town, an alderman proposed allowing chickens and he was kind of ridiculed, I'm sorry to say. In honor of Earth Day, I'd like to recommend a book that helps us all find low-cost ways to save the planet. It's The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget" and it's got lots of info on eco-trends and innovation that make it increasingly affordable -- not to mention convenient! -- for people to lead environmentally conscious lives and lifestyles. This book has introduced me to lots of green companies and products that I never knew existed. I don't know how Josh Dorfman (the author, BTW) finds all this stuff.

Great book for today, that's for sure!
