Does anyone know anything about having a pet rabbit? My son is a huge fan of bunnies--in book, song and stuffed forms--and just last night my husband voiced a something I had been thinking about for a while: Should we get him a bunny?
This is not going to happen any time soon. We still have an old, blind, incontinent dog to care for at the moment. And, of course, the chickens. But I'd like to start lightly researching rabbit ownership now so we can figure out if it's a good idea, or not. Plus, my husband needs plenty of time to design the coolest rabbit hutch ever.
So, are there any good rabbit blogs out there? Any websites you'd recommend? Personal experiences to share? I do think it would be nice to have an outdoor bunny enclosure, so I'm not too worried about poop or gnawing on electrical cords, but I'd want a breed that likes to be petted and brushed, at least.
Let me know your thoughts.

Hello there, a couple experiences that I can share:
*make sure ahead of time that no one in your family is allergic (this seems silly, but it happened to me)
*if there is an exotic animal vet nearby, sometimes they offer rabbit care classes
*rabbits are pretty delicate animals, they have fragile skeletons and they scare easily
*outdoor rabbits tend to get ignored after the newness wears off, maybe consider rabbit proofing a room to bring bunny in for playtime every evening

I hope this helps!
I have a friend who has 3 kids ages 5-10, and one of them inadvertently crushed their pet rabbit while giving it a hug... so I'd hesitate to get one for kids. My personal experience is with albino meat rabbits. We had one rejected baby that was a fun housepet for me as an early teenager, but never liked being held. It had free reign in my room and the only trouble it ever caused was with an unprotected phone cord. The outdoor ones were fun to feed, some of the adults would try to bite people.
Do you know Dave Vamos over at Six Point Harness? He had a bunny for about 15 years. If you're still interested in bunnies, he can probably give you the basics...
Hey, Terry Golsom writes a great blog at hencam.com.
Not only is she a wonderful author (she's written a GREAT kids book, too) but she keeps two sets of chickens and for years had a sweet bunny named "Candy" who lived in one of her coops.
Candy recently died, but Terry's archives are full of stories and photos of Candy with the hens. They seemed like a great match, but of course your mileage may vary. Bunnies have distinct personalities, just like chickens.
Best of luck and thanks for the work you put into your blog.
